The Brick:
In My Own Words & Street View
_
Designing with care for sensitive, personal stories.
The Streets Apart Cultural Programme is a 3-year project funded by Historic England and managed by The Old Courts, in partnership with Wigan Council, Wigan Local History and Heritage Society, Wigan. Building Preservation Trust, Stolen Thread, Healthy Arts and Wigan Little Theatre. My role was to support the co-creation of two publications, led by Photographer Ciara Leeming, drawing on Wigan’s King Street as inspiration. This involved the layout and design for both publications for both web and print.
‘In Our Own Words’ features work made by people at The Brick, during a series of workshops with artist Ciara Leeming and myself. Participants used photography and collage to explore the heritage of King Street and their own relationship with the town. The Brick supports people in the Wigan borough who have experienced homelessness or poverty.
The photos in ‘Street View’ were taken by members of the public who responded creatively to a series of walks down King Street with artist Ciara Leeming in early 2022, as part of the Streets Apart project. Participants photographed the street and came together to reflect on their memories of and feelings about the area. The accompanying texts are the result of conversations with people who attended the walks plus a number of other Wiganers who have worked on King Street or use it in other ways.
