Real Crafty:
International Women's Day
I was approached to design the promotional artwork for an event at a local pub for international women’s day. The event was a celebration of women in music across genres and decades. From the fierce and empowering to the marginal and forgotten.
My inspiration came from my own love of creating mixtapes of my favourite songs when I was younger, so I decided individual mixtapes were going to be the focus which I began drawing on Adobe Illustrator.
I wanted to emulate a DIY aesthetic so chose to include the artists that were going to be played in a handwritten font on each tape. Once I had created enough mixtapes that included a vast array of artists that would be played it was time to create the typography.
I have always been drawn to the bold aesthetic of 70’s/80’s band posters, these decades were an era of bold experimentation in Graphic Design, with illustrations often taking centre stage to capture the essence of the music scene.
I chose to incorporate vintage style typography to evoke the nostalgia and energy of the musical eras that were going to be played on the night.
